Following his hymn of praise to Jesus (vv.15-20), Paul discussed the Gospel's personal application to the Colossians. Paul's was grateful for their initial reception of salvation but his concern was that they continue in the Gospel that Epaphras (1:7) shared with them.

Paul continues his epistle's opening expression of thanksgiving by petitioning God to fill the Colossians with the fullness of His will. This would empower them to live their lives pleasing to God.
