The specific issue was participation in pagan festivals at which foods offered to idols was served. Were Christians free to participate or not, and what happens if there are different convictions within the church? In his response, Paul provides a balance to Christian liberty.

As litigious as our culture is, Corinth may have been worse. Apparently, this litigious attitude infiltrated the church and required address by Paul. There are at least three reasons why Christians bringing lawsuits against other Christians in a church is wrong, and ridiculously carnal.

In Act 1 Scene 1, Hosea obeyed God and married Gomer, a woman with an adulterous heart. This marriage symbolized God's experience of Israel's spiritual adultery (idolatry). By the third child, the marriage covenant (the Mosaic Law) was threatened with dissolution. In this scene, readers attend "Divorce Court." As before, God offers hope to His people.
